Virat Kohli: First match of the series is important. We wanted to take the momentum of the Test win into this and when we restricted South Africa to 270 on this sort of a pitch, we were happy.
Very happy for Jinx (Ajinkya Rahane). Jinx is a top class player. We understood fast bowling was going to be a big factor in this tour. He was superb, he took on the fast bowlers.
Bhuvi and Bumrah, we bank on them (in the bowling attack). Picking up one or two wickets in the top ten is what we wanted to do. And then the two wristpsinners - outstanding bowling by both of them. They are working wonderfully for the team. They’re playing in South Africa for the first time. They were very brave, they were throwing it up and that’s why they got wickets. As a captain, its outstanding when you have two guys who know what they want to do.

India win by six wickets. Their first at Kingsmead, Durban. Dhoni finishes off with a stylish boundary. It was Kohli and Rahane who laid the foundation for what turned out to be a comfortable win. It wasn’t always the case as their openers departed early on. Kohli-Rahane shared a record 189-run stand for the third wicket. Kohli brought up his first-ever ton in South Africa along the way, as Rahane gave fine support with a well-made 79.

WICKET! Kohli falls for 112 runs. He looks to hook a slower bouncer off Phehlukwayo, but mistimes it and his caught by Rabada in the deep. Brings to an end a masterful knock. Chasing a tricky target, India needed a big score from at least one of its batsmen, and it was the skipper who stepped up.
Kohli c Rabada b Phehlukwayo 112 (b: 119, 4s: 10, 6s: 0).

After 43 overs, IND 257/3 (Kohli 109*, Pandya 0*).
DROPPED! Substitute fielder Zondo spills Kohli’s catch off Phehlukwayo. The batsman was batting on 108. he wicket would not have mattered as India just 13 more runs to win from 41 balls.

After 42.4 overs, IND 257/3 (Kohli 109*).
WICKET! Rahane out for 79. Looks to hoick another one, but holes out at long on. A fine innings comes to an end. Was crucial in context of the game and an important knock for him individually.
Rahane c Tahir b Phehlukwayo 79 (b: 86, 4s: 5, 6s: 2).

100 for Kohli! His first-ever in South Africa! Has been another masterful performance from the India skipper. On a day when his opposite number score triple-digits, Kohli answers with another remarkable century in a chase. This is his 33rd ODI century overall.

After 39 overs, IND 232/2 (Kohli 89*, Rahane 74*).
Kohli-Rahane have now added 165 runs for the third wicket. India coasting at the moment and are within touching-distance of their first-ever win at Kingsmead in Durban. India still need another 38 runs to win from 11 overs.

After 35 overs, IND 190/2 (Kohli 77*, Rahane 51*).
Fifty for Rahane! His fifth consecutive half century in ODI cricket. A fine innings from the batsman. India were in search of a permanent No 4, may be this will put an end to that search once and for all. Or is it too premature? India still need another 80 runs to win from 15 overs.

After 31 overs, IND 167/2 (Kohli 71*, Rahane 34*).
Kohli, Rahane have now added 100 runs for the third wicket. The stand has completely taken South Africa out of the contest. The hosts need a flurry of wickets here if they hope to stop India’s march towards the target. India need another 103 runs to win off 19 overs.

After 26 overs, IND 141/2 (Kohli 52*, Rahane 27*).
FIFTY for Kohli! He brings it up in 56 balls. His 46th in ODIs. Has been a fine knock so far. Crucial as India chase a tricky target of 270. He has never scored a century in South Africa. Will today be that day? India need another 129 runs to win from 24 overs.

After 22.1 overs, IND 117/2 (Kohli 35*, Rahane 20*).
Kohli, Rahane have now added 50 runs off 62 balls for the third wicket. The duo has batted well together. Rahane, who came into the game after a prolonged debate over his presence in the playing XI, has batted confidently. He’s supported his skipper well, who at the other end is looking as solid as ever. The duo has shut out South Africa, who were on top as their pacers bowled drilled in some quick deliveries.

After 20 overs, IND 106/2 (Kohli 31*, Rahane 14*).
100 up for India! Kohli strokes a smart straight drive for a boundary. The skipper along with Rahane has done well to steady the ship after the openers departed. India have a few specialist batsmen to follow, but the onus is on these two to make the majority of the remaining runs.

After 17 overs, IND 86/2 (Kohli 21*, Rahane 6*).
India’s new first-choice No 4 Ajinkya Rahane has settled down after a few quiet overs. He’s brought some calm to proceedings after Dhawan’s run-out. India need a stable partnership to keep them on track in the chase. Kohli looking solid at the other end.

After 15 overs, IND 73/2 (Kohli 17*, Rahane 1*).
WICKET! Dhawan run-out. Kohli calls for a quick single, but Dhawan is nowhere in position to scamper for the run. Markram with a fine direct hit.
Dhawan looked to flick Morris over midwicket, but gets an inside edge on to the pads. There’s a shout, but the umpire turns it down. Kohli, though, wants a run. Dhawan heeds to his skipper’s call. But, Markram is too quick with the throw.
Dhawan run out 35 (b: 29b, 4s: 6, 6s: 0).

After 12 overs, IND 66/1 (Dhawan 35, Kohli 9*).
Tahir comes into the attack, but India are keeping the scorecard ticking. Dhawan is at his attacking best so far. Kohli is playing patiently at the other end. They will not want Tahir to settle down quickly.

After 11 overs, IND 59/1 (Dhawan 30*. Kohli 7*).
FIFTY up for India. At this stage of their innings, South Africa were also at the same mark. The difference is India have a target to play with. Rabada & Co are bowling some fast and making the ball bounce. Rohit perished looking to smash one such fast and searing delivery, but Dhawan, Kohli have batted sensibly since.

After 7 overs, IND 37/1 (Dhawan 16*, Kohli 1*).
WICKET! Rohit departs on 20. He skies it in the air off Morkel. Keeper calls for it and takes a fine running catch. Makes it look easy. Rohit had looked confident up until this point, but his perishes trying a hoick which was ill-advised to say the least.
Rohit c de Kock b Morkel 20 (b: 3b, 4s: 2, 6s; 1).

After 5 overs, IND 25/0 (Rohit 12*, Dhawan 12*).
After a watchful start, Rohit, Dhawan let their bat swing a bit. They have been helped by wayward bowling by South Africa’s front-end bowlers.

After 2 overs, IND 3/0 (Rohit 1*, Dhawan 1*).
Sedate start for India. Rohit, Dhawan are watchful as the lights take effect at Kingsmead. South Africa’s pacers will want to get an early breakthrough in.

After 50 overs, SA 269/8. India need 270 runs to win.
Du Plessis’ ton was the game-changer for SA, who were put under pressure as their top-order returned to the hut without much on the board. With De Villiers absent, SA needed one of their batsmen to come good. Du Plessis stepped up to the challenge and played a captain’s knock.

WICKET! Rabada is run out for 1 as SA look to make every ball count. He attempts to run as the ball goes down leg for a wide. Dhoni is quick to send the ball to the other end.
Rabada run out 1 (1b).

After 49.2 overs, SA 264/7.
WICKET! Du Plessis is dismissed for 120. Looks for another big one over the long-off fence, but can’t go the distance. Bhuvneshwar gets his first scalp of the day.
Du Plessis c Pandya b Kumar 120 (b: 112, 4s: 11, 6s: 2).

After 49 overs, SA 264/6.
Du Plessis, Phehlukwayo have now added 51 runs off 48 balls for the seventh wicket. Du Plessis has taken the charge. He’s getting the sixes in. The two smashed 16 runs in that last Bumrah over.

Afer 48 overs, SA 248/6 (Du Plessis 109*, Phehlukwayo 19*).
Du Plessis gets a lifeline. The SA skipper skies it in the air. Rahane in the deep goes for the catch, but back off at the last minute. The sun gets in his eyes, he gestures. Du Plessis smashes the a six soon after as SA look for a competitive total.

After 47 overs, SA 237/6 (Du Plessis 101 off 102 balls).
100 for Du Plessis! The captain has led from the front. After the top-order folded cheaply, Du Plessis played a patient knock and held the innings together. In the past few overs, he has been at his counter-attacking best. The team will want him to keep going if they hope to achieve a competitive total.

After 44 overs, SA 221/6 (Du Plessis 90*, Phehlukwayo 9*).
Kuldeep and Chahal finish their quota of overs. Has been an impressive display from both wrist-spinners. Kuldeep finishes with figures of 10-0-34-3, while Chahal ends with 10-0-45-2. They helped dry up the runs for SA early on and then reaped the rewards with crucial wickets.

After 41 overs, SA 208/6 (Du Plessis 88*).
WICKET! Against the run of play, Kuldeep has Morris bowled. He looks to sweep the ball on the full, but misses the ball completely. SA had just crossed 200 as the partnership between Morris and Du Plessis swelled to over fifty.
Morris b Kuldeep 37 (43b, 4s: 4).

After 38 overs, SA 188/5 (Du Plessis 79*, Morris 26*).
Fifty-run stand for Du Plessis and Morris. It’s been a great counter-attacking partnership. Need of the hour for the hosts. Du Plessis has adopted a stoic approach coupled has been complemented well by Morris’ aggressive approach. The duo’s effort has helped negate India’s spin threat in the past few overs.

After 36 overs, SA 174/5 (Du Plessis 75*, Morris 16*).
India lose their review. Morris looks to play a ball going down leg but appears to have missed it. Umpire says it’s a wide. Kohli, though, feels there’s a noise and asks for a referral. Replays, though, show there was no edge.

After 35 overs, SA 166/5 (Du Plessis 71*, Morris 13*).
Du Plessis, Morris are looking the break the shackles now. They have now added 32 runs for the sixth wicket. A few boundaries in the last two overs have helped improve the run-rate a bit. South Africa, though, need a lot more at this moment.

After 34 overs, SA 152/5 (Du Plessis 66*, Morris 8*).
150 up for SA.
Du Plessis is still hanging in there. SA’s run-rate, though, isn’t too pleasing. It has been under 5 for a while now. Morris at the other end now. The hosts needs this pair to dig deep and forge a steady stand.

After 28 overs, SA 134/5.
WICKET! Miller gone. Kohli takes a fine catch at short cover to dismiss Miller off Kuldeep. Diving forward, the Indian captain made it look easy. The umpires sent it up to check if it was clean. Replays, though, showed that it was as clean as it could be.
Miller c Kohli b Kuldeep Yadav 7 (9m 7b, 4s: 1).

After 27.4 overs, SA 134/4.
Fifty for Du Plessis! His 30th in ODI cricket. As the wickets tumble at the other end, the South Africa skipper has remained firm and scored an under-stated, yet important in the context of the game.

After 26 overs, SA 122/4.
WICKET! Duminy departs for 12. He’s deceived by a googly from Kuldeep. Duminy rocks back on the back foot looking for a cut, but the ball comes into the left-hander, who can’t bring his bat down for a defensive shot in time.
Duminy b Kuldeep 12 (18b, 4s: 1).

After 25 overs, SA 120/3 (Du Plessis 46*, Duminy 11*).
While Chahal has the two wickets next to his name, Kuldeep Yadav has bowled well at the other other end. Has helped dry up the runs. Given away just 15 runs from five overs. Now Kedar Jadhav too is making the batsmen struggle for their runs.

After 21 overs, SA 103/3 (Du Plessis 40*).
WICKET! Chahal gets another! Pandya takes a smart catch at short midwicket as Markram struggles to keep the ball down. This Chahal’s second scalp so far. India on top.
Markram c Pandya b Chahal 9 (21b, 4s: 0).

After 17 overs, SA 87/2 (Du Plessis 31*, Markram 2*).
Run-out appeal against Du Plessis. He puts in a full length dive. The decision is sent upstairs. Fortunately for SA, their skipper has made his ground.

After 16 overs, SA 84/2.
WICKET! De Kock departs for 34. Chahal deceives him with spin. The spinner drills in around leg stump, De Kock goes for a flick and misses. The umpire raises the finger. If he had gone a review, it have gone in his favour. Hawkeye shows it would have gone down leg.
De Kock lbw Chahal 34 (49b, 4s: 4).

After 11 overs, SA 53/1 (De Kock 21*, Du Plessis 15*).
India’s pacers have done well to maintain pressure over the SA batsmen in the powerplay, but the batsmen have done just enough to keep the scorecard ticking. Amla’s dismissal did add pressure, but De Kock and Du Plessis have made sure it wasn’t immediately felt.

After 10 overs, SA 49/1 (De Kock 18*, Du Plessis 14*).
Du Plessis has come in with all guns blazing. Smashes Bhuvneshwar for three consecutive boundaries. De Kock too seems unfazed by Amla’s departure. He has batted confidently since the start. Strokes a fine four off Bumrah in the next over to take the hosts close to 50 at the end of the powerplay.

After 8 overs, SA 31/1 (De Kock 13*).
WICKET! Amla LBW! Bumrah gets a full ball in and it angles into the batsman, who is struck on the pads. Looks to be hitting the off stump. Umpire raises his finger.
There were doubts whether the bowler over-stepped. Bumrah planted his foot on the popping crease. the third umpire deemed that there was some part of the foot behind the line. A very very small part, by the look of things.
Amla lbw Bumrah 16 (17b, 4s: 1).

Update: Virat Kohli was off the field and is being looked at by the physio in the dugout. Looks to have had a strain in his left knee after the tumble. He’s back on the field now.

Kohli was left limping as the grass came off as he put in a dive. Photo: Sportzpics/BCCI.

After 7 overs, SA 29/0 (De Kock 12*, Amla 16*).
Kohli tumbles in the mud. Amla strokes a fine cover drive, Kohli chases He catches up well before the ball can reach the boundary line. His knee, though, gets stuck in the ground as he puts in a slide. He gets up quickly, but is limping a bit. That must have hurt.

After 5 overs, SA 18/0 (De Kock 10*, Amla 7*).
Bhuvi, Bumrah getting some extra bounce. There have been a few edges, but nothing deadly enough to keep the batsmen on their toes. The boundaries have come quite regularly since the start.

After 3 overs, SA 13/0 (De Kock 6*, Amla 7*).
De Kock is batting confidently. A far cry from how he performed in the Tests. Good early signs for SA, who are missing De Villiers through injury. Amla too seems to have picked up from where he had left off in the Tests. Sound start for hosts.

After 1 over, SA 3/0
De Kock, Amla come out to open the innings for South Africa. Bhuvneshwar Kumar will bowl the first over. There’s no real movement off the pitch. The wicket looks pretty flat. Amla is not shuffling around in the crease like he did in the Tests.

Pitch: Shaun Pollock, in his pitch report, says there will be carry for the seamers early on, but the pitch will slow down as the game progresses. Spinner should get some grip and turns as well, he says.

India have never won at Kingsmead, Durban. Photo: Sportzpics/BCCI.

Virat Kohli: We would have batted first here as well. It’s a pretty easy decision because of the conditions around. Playing two wrist-spinners and Kedar as the offie, along with Bhuvi and Bumrah, gives us an opportunity to do whatever we have to do.

Faf du Plessis: Generally what this wicket does is in the night. It speeds up. We’re looking for our seamers to use that.

South Africa win the toss, choose to bat first.

India XI: Rohit, Shikhar, Kohli (c), Rahane, Dhoni (wk), Kedar, Hardik, Bhuvneshwar, Kuldeep, Bumrah, Chahal.

SA XI: de Kock, Amla, du Plessis (c), Markram, Duminy, Miller, Morris, Phehlukwayo, Rabada, Morkel, Tahir.

South Africa and India will vie for the world number one ranking again when they meet in a six-match one-day international series, starting at Kingsmead on Thursday.

The one-day games start just five days after India retained their top ranking in Tests, although second-placed South Africa closed the points gap by winning the series 2-1.

South Africa are on top of the International Cricket Council one-day rankings by a slender one point from India. With the points adjusted after each match, there is the potential for the number one position to change from match to match.

The hosts will miss the services of AB de Villiers, who is out for the first three games with a finger injury. With South Africa’s premier batsman out, it will be advantage India.

India are coming into the series with momentum on their side. Despite losing the Test series, the Kohli-led side made a strong statement of intent with dramatic win in the Johannesburg Test.

They are grappling with selection hassles, with the role of the No 4 batsman still up for debate. skipper Kohli has hinted that Ajinkya Rahane is a front-runner for the job. After his solid performance in the third Test, it is likely that he will get the nod.
